丸尾 祐嗣  / Yuji Maruo

He is an architect of resonance, constructing an unseen “cathedral” of sound through rigorous theory and refined physical technique.

Rooted in the current of 19th-century Romanticism, he inherits the Russian pianistic tradition—particularly the Neuhaus lineage derived from the Chopin school—authentically carrying forward the grand sonic spaces reminiscent of the great masters of the past. The essence of his art lies in transcending performance dependent solely on sensation. By harnessing the absolute natural law of gravity, he meticulously designs the fusion of physical law and skeletal structure.

His achievement in systematizing abstract artistic expression into a universal method, The Maruo Method, reveals him as a solitary seeker devoted to the pursuit of truth.

He graduated at the top of his class from the Piano Department of Aichi Prefectural University of the Arts, receiving the Kuwabara Prize.

Since his debut, he has appeared in a wide range of performances, including concerts hosted by the Russian Consulate in Japan and the 84th Yomiuri Newcomer Concert. His true artistry shines especially in monumental works of vast architectural scope, such as Beethoven’s “Three Late Sonatas” and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. Like a great tree deeply rooted in the earth, his stability and logically grounded persuasiveness profoundly move both the intellect and the sensibility of his listeners.

He was awarded Second Prize at the 6th Rozario Marciano International Piano Competition (Vienna). On YouTube, he generously shares his rare and distinctive method with audiences worldwide.

Born in 1989 in Itami City, Hyogo, Japan.

He graduated at the top of his class from the Piano Department of Aichi Prefectural University of the Arts, receiving the Kuwabara Prize. He received the Invitation Prize at the Kobe Arts Center Memorial Piano Competition and presented a solo recital at the Arts Theater. He won Second Prize at the 6th Rozario Marciano International Piano Competition (Vienna). He has appeared in numerous concerts, including the Schlitz International Piano Academy Selected Concert (Germany), concerts hosted by the Russian Consulate in Japan, NHK Nagoya Culture programs, subscription and graduation concerts at Aichi Prefectural University of the Arts, the 84th Yomiuri Newcomer Concert, the VIP Pianist Academy Selected Concert (Vienna), Munetsugu Lunch Time Concerts, The Nippon Foundation Lunch Time Concerts, the Beethoven 250th Anniversary Project “Three Late Sonatas Recital” at Nagakute Cultural House, and the 50th Anniversary of Stravinsky’s Death Project performance of The Rite of Spring, among many others.

He has participated in masterclasses with Jean-Marc Luisada, Andrei Pisarev, Andrzej Jasiński, Krzysztof Jabłoński, Dina Yoffe, Anna Malikova, Maxim Mogilevsky, and Andrei Gavrilov. He was a scholarship recipient of the Aoyama Music Foundation.

He has studied under Seiko Miyamoto, Naomi Ishii, Susumu Aoyagi, Emiko Kumagai, Ralf Nattkemper, and Shinji Ohno. Since his university years, he has researched a contemporary piano technique based on the Neuhaus school of Russian pianism, characterized by tonal color and Romanticism.

Currently, based on his own pianistic philosophy, he is active in solo and chamber music performance, masterclasses, public lectures, and teaching. His recordings are available on streaming platforms such as Aria CD and Apple Music.

He shares his work on YouTube through “Yūji Maruo’s Contemporary Piano Method – The Maruo Method.”

He is an exclusive artist of Kitagata Music Office Co., Ltd., and is currently conducting a new style of seminar, “Piano Camp,” specializing in a contemporary piano technique focused on the refinement of a single tone.
